Mexico's Bicentennial is this year, September 15th. One of my friends is having a big celebration and it's a costume party! Another one of my friends designated me her costume designer for the event. I of course, said yes. Breaking one of my cardinal rules, I do not sew for people unless I gave birth to them, or in the case of NFN (gave birth to her mom).
It will be fun, I have several months to think about it. I may want to go as the Empress Carlota, that would be fun. I love this dress and it's my favorite time period.
But, that is a little bizarre since the revolution was against them...there are other options.

I did threaten to make her a rumbera or bata Cubana. Mostly because I really love all the ruffles and I think she could pull it off. Maybe for Carnival? Wouldn't that be fun?

I like the China Poblana a lot and it can be a good basis for an Adelita costume. The Adelitas were the camp followers of the revolution.
Regardless, it will be fun to attend a costume party. It will be great to see what everyone comes up with.
Sshhush though, I haven't told Husband yet...

What a wonderful way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution! I can totally relate to the "not sewing for anyone..." rule that you are prepared to break. I want so badly to go to DF in September.
Have you read that fat little tome of a book about Carlotta and Max by the Mexican historian? The title escapes me now but I will go find it when daylight comes.
I hope you have a lot of fun getting ready for the costume party. I love the Adelitas outfits, even more than Carlotta's!!!
Two must-read books about Maximilian and Carlota are C.M. Mayo's The Last Prince of Mexico and Prince Michael of Greece's The Empress of Farewells. At the very least, take a look at www.cmmayo.com's page on Maximilian.
But let's not get independence and revolution mixed up. Independence culminated in naming Augustin de Iturbe I as emperor. Maximilian and Carlota were in place a half-century later. And the Revolution would not take place until a half-century after Maximilian reached room temperature.
I can hardly wait to see what you do sew. Have fun. Hot, hot over here. Take care.
The Pliers, I am disgracefully ignorant of Mexican History. I know a lot about English history, some about American history but I'm vague on Mexican. So the answer is no I haven't read that book.
Jennifer, I saw a play (in Spanish) that was about Carlota but I have it fairly well mixed up in my brain. I did know that it's the 200 year anniversary of Independence and the 100 year anniversary of the revolution. I still want that dress!
Gloria, it will probably end up Adelitas. Easy to come up with and an easy costume to wear at a party. Peasant costumes are very practical even carrying rifles and babies!

A costume party - what a fun idea! We planned our next trip to coincide with the BIG celebration...can't wait!
Hope we get a sneak peak of the costumes, too!
Err, I mean peek!
Susan, of course, but I have to actually make some first! I think they won't require much making, just some gathering of skirts and tops.
regards,
Theresa
