People change and so do blogs

¿What do I do all day? has been online since October 22, 2007. My very first post, Great Plans and Ambitions was a bit short. In it I announced my idea of creating an online plant encyclopedia. I never made the plant encyclopedia,my interests changed. In the six years that I’ve been blogging I’ve posted 884 times and received 5711 comments. I don’t count spam but I do count my own replies. I believe it’s important to answer comments, I even blogged about it. That post resonated with my fellow bloggers so much that I immediately followed it up with The Great Comment Debate.

Husband and I have lived in Merida for close to a decade now, and while where I live influences many of the things that I do, it has become less of a focus for this blog. I’ve come to the realization that where I live my life is not as important as how I live my life.

I’ve been doing some serious thinking about what my purpose is. I want to live a creative and authentic life. I also want to help other people do the same thing. With that in mind, I am revamping this blog. It’s moving to a new home soon and getting a new look. Don’t worry, I will still blog about living in Mexico and most of my old posts are making the move too.

I have come up with a mission statement. Please tell me what you think about it. DIY means Do It Yourself.

Yes, you can do it yourself. You can take control of your life. We are lead to believe that we have to let life happen to us, not create our own paths, We can do it ourselves. The information  to live creative, healthy and abundant lives is readily available. We all are capable people.

We are told by the media that cooking is too complicated and time consuming. It's not, unless you want it to be. I see all these misguided tutorials that say "No sew!!!" like they are doing you a favor. Rather than show you a simple way using needle and thread, they proceed to have you do things in a messy manner. If their no-sew method is so involved, no wonder people are  afraid of sewing being too complicated or difficult. People are looking for DIY for many things, for their health, to save money, to live better lives and be in control of them.

I want to talk about taking control back of our lives; of DIYing our lives. Maybe I am crazy and trying to do too much but I believe in this. It is amazing how many people don't try stuff because they have bought the idea that they can't do it themselves. Even if something doesn’t work out, you have gained a lot by just trying.

So my question is, will you be following me on my journey? Or have our paths diverged?

  1. Yes! I'll follow! I've read you for years, and can't imagine not.

I learn a lot from you and enjoy the heck out of your writing and your paintings. Not to mention get great ideas about re-vamping my own furniture.

Can't wait to see the "new you" in blog format!

  2. I always say: The media is paid by the word, they are not paid to be right, so it is best to be a bit skeptical of media advice. I have taught myself many skills, wiring seems dark and dangerous. I taught myself and have never tripped a breaker after a job. My first picnic table was no prize but it was still in use 20 years later-they look better now. DIY is possible, it just tends to take longer than if a pro does the work.

  3. Theresa, I have read your blog since 2007. I aspire to live my life in Merida similar to yours...so keep blogging so I can keep reading (and learning)! And I hope you (and yours)can come over for dinner with Carlos and I in December! Thanks for teaching me so much...PQ

  4. Barbara,
thank you for your vote of confidence!

    Norm,
I agree. Also a gifted amateur often is better at something than a professional. Even a pro didn't start out doing it perfectly, they just have more opportunity to practice. Jacques Pépin said in an October 2011 NY Times interview,“You have no choice as a professional chef: you have to repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat until it becomes part of yourself,” he said. “I certainly don’t cook the same way I did 40 years ago, but the technique remains. And that’s what the student needs to learn: the technique.”

Carlos Q and Pat Q,Wow, that is quite a compliment! Thank you for the invitation, it would be great fun to meet you!

    regards,
    Theresa

  5. If I were to raise an objection about a blog becoming more ecliptic, I would certainly not be following my own path. Go for it!

One of the great things about blogging is that there are no mistakes -- just lots and lots of learning experiences. (He said with his tongue boring a hole in his cheek.)

  6. Steve Cotton,
I had to look up ecliptic, which left me even more confused.

    e·clip·tic
    /iˈkliptik/
    Noun
A great circle on the celestial sphere representing the sun's apparent path during the year, so called because lunar and solar eclipses...
    Adjective
Of an eclipse or the ecliptic.

I am thinking it was a typo which snuck past spellcheck.

    Theresa

  12. If one is doing the same thing year after year then one is not growing. Looking forward to the new journey.

  13. Contessa,
I just heard the best quote today.

"Self-confidence doesn’t come from success; it comes from taking risks." Ann Richards, former governor or Texas.

I want to step out of my comfort zone and become more self-confident.

    regards,
    Theresa
